This month Hello Milano celebrates the sales. During the Christmas holidays foreign shoppers flock to Milan to spend and spend, searching for something different to slip in their Santa stockings. Happy to oblige Audi staged a pop-up shop-front on via Montenapoleone in the pre-Christmas push this year. At an address well known for luxury and style, should you have fancied a yellow Miura by Lamborghini, a Parcour Italdesign Giugiaro, a hybrid A3 Sportback e-tron, or perhaps even a Lamborghini Huracan, they were all on sale, pre-wrapped in crystal display cases, prices available on request. Sadly these desirable pieces are unlikely to end up with a ‘discount’ tag come January 6th when the sales begin in earnest and foreigners flock once more, this time to ‘save’. There are two ways to do the sales in Milan: buy ‘em cheap and pile ‘em high, or bide your time and look for lux. Either way there‘s an embarrassment of choice in this, the fashion capital of Italy. If it’s a whole new wardrobe you’re after head to Corso Vittorio Emanuele II near the Duomo, or Corso Buenos Aires near Porta Venezia. What else is there to know about shopping? Hello Milano spoke to Ruby Victor, an expert in luxury fashion branding and PR. “When hitting the sales it really pays to have a strategy” she laughs. “It’s too easy to shop for some fantasy fashion-world rather than the real thing – I have armfuls of cute little cocktail dresses at home which are beautiful to look at, but completely useless in my day to day life.” Ruby rates the outlets which you can find in town and out, but is not a big fan of crowds. “Actually my advice would be to avoid the chains and the high street stores. This is your chance to upgrade your wardrobe, so do your research in advance. Check out those investment pieces online and in magazines. On the day limit yourself to between three to five shops and go find your item. Is it worth the money now you’ve got it up close? Do they have your size? Now take a coffee break and mull it all over. This is how you avoid those big, expensive, uncomfortable mistakes” she laughs again, “I figured that out the hard way.” Armed with this sound practical advice, Hello Milano went to meet ex-personal shopper Marion Harbour, to get the low down on where to find these bargains. Marion is no stranger to the hoards of foreigners who flood in for the January sales, and she surprises me by revealing that 40% of her clients used to be men, “Mainly Russians, who knew exactly what they were after: shoes and shirts on the whole. Women on the other hand want a little bit of everything.” Over the years she has catered to many different nationalities, South Africans, Americans, Australians and the Swiss. “But I’ve never worked with the Chinese. I think they have their own networks.” Marion also recommends aiming high, “for example, the shops on Via Manzoni. The fabrics they use are good and the sales are genuine. You’re getting 30% off a really high quality product.” This is a beautiful street, one-time home of the great author, with some extremely chic cafés for that all-important coffee break. Opposite lies the famous Via Montenapoleone, which Marion confides is the street for bags and shoes. Having met at the cute period bar on San Babila, Marion and I walk down Corso Vittorio Emanuele II toward the Duomo and one of her favourite intown outlet stores. Tucked inside a parallel street on Galleria San Carlo, it is unprepossessing from the outside. Inside it`s a treasure trove of discounted luxury goods. Marion took me inside where the cashmere coats were selling at 50% off, and this is before the sales. She examined an elegant white and grey scarf, glancing at my plain grey coat. To cut a long story short I am now the proud owner of a winter scarf and a little bit converted to big-name brand shopping. I only paid E15. Not bad for a beginner. Walking further down the road you come to the iconic Milanese department store, Rinascente, not to be missed during the sales – not least for its fabulous Christmas decorations. Its top floor suite of restaurants and bars are perfect for weary shoppers to soothe their souls with thick, creamy hot chocolate and a view of the Duomo’s sculptured spires, before plunging back into the fray below. “If you are getting tired of the same old brands, try Viale Piave, near Porta Venezia, on the right of Buenos Aires. There are lots of great little boutiques there for clothes, and some lovely home-furnishings.” “I can’t stress enough the importance of planning ahead” finished Ruby. ” Otherwise you could end up, like me, with a bag full of fashion-fabulous heels that look like heaven and hurt like hell. In my experience it’s almost always the shoes I regret”. For top tips on the very best shopping districts, see our online guide to shopping, street markets and sizing – also our July article ‘A Style for any Budget’. Italian first day covers and other philatelic products are sold at Via Cordusio 4. Post information, tel. 803160, Mon-Sat, 8.00-20.00, www. poste.it. • Public transport In Milan, buses, trams and metro (underground) trains are run by a company named ATM. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsagents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some stations), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. The largest ATM ticket sales and info offices are the ATM Point information offices in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Loreto and Romolo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Metro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams (the magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey), but with just the one Metro journey, or one journey on a Passante Ferroviario train, or on a FNM train (within city limits). The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first franking: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Metro system consists of 4 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). The FNM is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. For info on FNM trains, there is an info office in the Cadorna station, open 7.00 to 20.00 every day. www.lenord.it Metro trains run from around 6.15 until 00.30, except on Saturday nights when trains run till about 02.00. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large interchange car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (MM1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (MM2), open 7.0001.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fiera trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, toll-free info at 800.808181 (7.30-19.30), www. atm-mi.it. The “Radiobus” service, operating from 20.00 to 02.00, is like a collective taxi service. A very comfortable air-conditioned minicoach picks you up and takes you where you want to go. You have to book by phone Don’t miss Apulia’s treasures Apulia “trulli” Apulia food Apulia sea Apulia vacations www.mtvpuglia.it at 02.4803.4803, preferably well in advance – say a few hours – or even just before your trip, but in this case you run the risk of not getting a place as well as spending ages listening to a recorded message. Cost €4 if you pay on the bus, less if you buy the ticket (ordinary ATM ticket + Radiobus ticket, total €3.50) in advance. This service may seem complicated, but it is so convenient and comfortable that it’s well worth the effort. • Railways Most trains leave from the Stazione Centrale. Train information can be obtained from the information office at the station, or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that any train ticket should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, find the conductor on the train as soon as possible, and the fine will be reduced. For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes after departure. For the differently abled and people with sight problems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 199.30.30.60, operating every day, 7.00-21.00. Ferrovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to various locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Malpensa airport. See www.lenord.it • Safety and security In Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro during the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the normal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have nothing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financing organized crime. • Taxis It is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line estimates at www.milanotaxi.it • Telephones The 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). Numbers starting 339, 347, 348 etc. are for mobile phones, these calls cost more. Numbers starting with 0 are for fixed phones, 1 for public utilities (police etc.), 3 for mobiles, 8 for toll-free numbers. • Ticket info: Teatro alla Scala The ticket office is in Duomo metro station. It is open every day 12.00-18.00 (closed public holidays and August). Payment in Euro cash or by credit card. Transport: to get to the stadium before the match, MM1 Lotto then free shuttle bus, or tram 16 from MM1 De Angeli. A worldwide remembrance of the war hoping for peace page 12 January 2015 hello hello In September 1914 Pope Benedict XV took office and in the autumn pressed for a Christmas ceasefire in the war that had been raging through Europe for some time, an idea which was officially rejected. However on a frosty morning 100 years ago, German soldiers began to place Christmas trees lit with lanterns above their trenches and both sides began to call out to each other, an unofficial truce ensued along much of the Western Front, with both sides laying down their arms, stepping out from their trenches and spending Christmas together. The event, described in many letters sent to their families by the soldiers, has been seen as a kind of miracle, a rare moment of peace during a war that claimed over 15 million lives. Italy marked the beginning of its 3-yearlong and bloody war, on May 24th 1915. The Italian King declared the general mobilization of the Royal Italian Army, consisting mainly of countrymen, factory workers and a great number of volunteer intellectuals and artists, like Gabriele D’Annunzio, Eugenio Montale, Aldo Palazzeschi and Sandro Pertini. Some of whom wrote war poems such as “Soldati” and “San Martino del Carso” by Ungaretti, “Natale de guerra” by Trilussa. During this time religious comfort had an important role, even for Jewish soldiers, ensuring the principle of “equality”; and the Royal Italian Army took care of its soldiers with proxy marriage and accelerated procedures so that soldiers could marry quickly. Many letters were written from the battlefront by soldiers, addressed to their mothers, relatives and girlfriends. Many of these were love letters or wills that expressed the highest regard for family values as well as the soldiers’ deepest moods. y u B y u B milano Life on the front line and in the trenches, where soldiers’ activities were marked by battles and sacrifices but also by the surreal normality of waiting or resting times, was difficult and exhausting. The key role played by the incisive propaganda during the conflict, firstly to obtain consensus to enter the war, These and other information is contained in a military calendar which has been printed by the Italian Army in remembrance of the Italian Centennial and can be found at every post office. This also included helping the wounded to learn to read and write, an idea which was not always received with enthusiasm! Personalised Tours and Last Supper tickets Let A Friend in Milan introduce you to the delights of Milan and surroundings. Stroll through the city or shop at your leisure! Walking Tours The Italian Regiment Horse Artillery and later addressed to soldiers and civilians (the so-called P Service) is commonly known. One famous example of this was the ‘air raid’ inspired by Gabriele D’Annunzio where thousands of copies of a leaflet, written by Ugo Ojetti, were dropped by planes flying over Vienna. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region was the main fighting area and the Piave battle, which was followed by the defeat of the AustroHungarian forces, who were forced to withdraw definitively, marked an Italian victory. Some interesting war curiosities are, for instance, the use of ropeways, of some armour similar to that used in the Middle Ages, the use of pedal-powered dynamo radio, the involvement of firefighters, the presence of the American poet Ernest Hemingway, who served on the Italian front as a U.S. Red Cross volunteer and the use of animals such as pigeons, dogs, and others. “The Great War … a People in Arms” is not only the story of what happened, it also reflects what the Army is now: an institution made up of Italians, men and women in uniform, who share values, feelings and ideals and keep in mind the sacrifices and the teachings of their forefathers. The calendar is crossed by the lines of the patriotic song “La leggenda del Piave” and the final section “The Great War in numbers” includes information reported by authoritative official sources (Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore Esercito) regarding warring personnel in the Italian Royal Army, the financial cost of war and the percentage of the population mobilized.
