L’uso politico dell’architettura forense / Forensics politicised
O
ggi l’architettura forense è utilizzata non solo dagli
inquirenti alla ricerca di prove fisiche di qualche reato,
ma anche per affermare o negare il diritto su un determinato
luogo. Il New York Post ha pubblicato una body map per
mettere in evidenza i punti in cui sono stati trovati i resti
delle vittime dell’attentato dell’11 settembre, allo scopo
di impedire la costruzione del centro islamico “Park51”.
I vigili del fuoco che scavarono fra le macerie di Lower
Manhattan compilarono una mappa dei resti umani rinvenuti.
Le parti di corpo e i reperti di DNA individuati venivano
tracciati e registrati con il sistema GPS.
Dalla mappa si può constatare come i ritrovamenti
si estendessero per più di trecento metri dal centro
del World Trade Center fino a mezzo isolato a sud
di “Park51”. La mappa, tuttavia, forniva solo una visione
parziale della ricerca dei resti. Oltre un milione di tonnellate
di macerie e frammenti delle strutture in acciaio del World
Trade Center erano state trasportate a Fresh Kills Landfill
subito dopo il collasso delle torri. La maggior parte dei resti
delle vittime, di conseguenza, è finita fra quei detriti.
A oggi, solo la metà di essi sono stati identificati.
L’acciaio della struttura è stato riciclato e venduto: 50.000
tonnellate a Shangai e 10.000 in India. La rapidità con cui
ciò è accaduto ha sottratto agli investigatori parte delle
prove più dirette in situ, lasciando aperti diversi interrogativi
circa la dinamica degli attentati. La dispersione delle prove
forensi non è però stata menzionata quando si voleva
dimostrare come Ground Zero si estendesse ben oltre
i limiti del sito, lambendo l’area prossima a “Park51”.
Questo esempio mostra chiaramente come l’architettura
forense e le verità che produce siano parte integrante
della produzione di significati e siano esposte, al pari
della fotografia, ai rischi di una politicizzazione sul terreno
della costruzione delle prove.
Tphysical evidence to reconstruct crime, but to substantiate right
oday forensics is not only consulted by investigators to find
to a place. The New York Post published a body map and brought the
issue of where human remains of victims of 9/11 were found, to
prevent the construction of the Muslim community centre “Park51”.
Fire fighters who filtered the wreckage of Lower Manhattan compiled
the map of human remains. Their discovery of human remains and
traces of DNA were tracked and recorded by using global positioning
systems. Points on the map indicate that the findings stretched as far
as 300m and more from the middle of the World Trade Center all the
way up to half a city block south of the “Park51”. But the map gives
only a partial insight into the search for remains. Over a million ton
debris and structural steel of the former World Trade Center were
rapidly brought to Fresh Kills Landfill after the collapse of the towers,
and the vast majority of the remains were culled from within the
debris. Of those remains, only half have been identified until today.
The structural steel was recycled and sold to Shanghai and India, and
this has cost investigators some of their most direct physical evidence
on site and the answers to the crime on September 11. The failures of
the destruction of forensic evidence weren’t mentioned to prove that
Ground Zero stretches beyond the boundaries of the site and reaches
close to the proposed “Park51”. This example vividly shows how
forensics and its truth claim are part of the production of meaning and
inherits – alike photography – the potential to be politicised on the
grounds of constructed evidence.
