The historians seem to have produced a reconstruction of the theory with regard to resistance for solid materials, coinciding with Galilei’ work. It is evident that they consider it as unique important modern contribution for a practice existed since late Middle Ages. The general object of my thesis is a historical analysis to understand the influence of mathematics and geometry in the design. A review of present historical reconstruction is presented basing it upon extensive epistemological considerations. The aim is to study though a historical–critic and foundations inquiry how and in which extent Galilei’s works feed on the ideas of the other scholars who were his contemporaries or who only preceded him. Particularly, to historical and historiographical studies, the following cases–study are presented: an investigations upon Archimede’ On the Equilibrium of planes, Libri VII and VIII of static in Quesiti et Invenzione diverse (1546; 1554) by Niccolò Tartaglia (1500?–1557). I also analyze wood–beams deformability (1478–1519: Codice Atlantico) by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) as well as and models and general mechanical laws with regard to cantilevers’ failure in the elasticity theory (1634: Le Mecaniche and Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche). The aim is catching mechanical characteristics which could have represented a basis of a development that has not already been underlined in subsequent Galilean mechanics. When it come to architecture, in order to catch in the Renaissance fortification plans crucial aspects (e.g. Bastion defence systems, enfilade and flank guns, drawbridge) of a primeval mechanical science different from the medieval machines, I shall present an historical analyses of Libro VI and its Gionta upon fortifications in Quesiti et Invenzioni diverse (1554) by Tartaglia, Trattato di Fortificazione (ca. 1592–93) by Galilei and Delle Fortificationi (1609) by Buonaiuto Lorini (1550– 1611). Final remarks upon relationship mechanics–history–urban close the thesis. Appendixes concerning problems and epistemological analyses will be presented in volume two. 3. The thesis is in two volumes. Presentation Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (Prof. dr. Jürgen Renn) In collaboration with The beginning of structural mechanics is historically linked to the publication of the Outline of the problem well known Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche sopra a due nuove scienze (1638) by Galileo Galilei. The historians seem to have produced a reconstruction (e.g.) of the theory of the resistance of solid materials that coincides with the works by Galilei. It is evident that they consider it the only important modern contribution of a practice that existed since the late Middle Ages. What is the influence of mathematics and geometry for Fortifications projects? And for the birth of mechanics? The proposal consists of an historical and epistemological analyses. 23–26 Raffaele Pisano, Ph.D. – Friday, 05 August 2011 General objectives Methodology of research Credits The general object of my thesis is a historical analysis to understand the influence of mathematics and geometry in the design. I will try to re–examine the present historical reconstruction basing it on extensive epistemological considerations. My intention is to study though a historical–critic and foundations inquiry how and in which extent Galilei’s works feed on the ideas of the other scholars who were his contemporaries or who only preceded him. Research and study based on primary sources I will use the classical and non–classical logic and the mathematics as historical investigation categories to discover the inductive or deductive character and the organization of pre–Galilean scientific theories. (e.g. Archimedes) Renaissance fortification plans in order to catch both the features of the mechanical science and the passage from the medieval towns based on relationships to the Renaissance ones conceived as a mixture of things for military defence only thanks to the outside wall improvement. The role played by the design and the technical studies by Leonardo da Vinci, Guidobaldo dal Monte and Galilei in the development of the Renaissance Science of mechanics. Dissertation of partial results and developments in the conferences workshops and meetings. Publications of the obtained results. Monitoring of the activities and objectives each four months. Additional studies in Italian and /or foreign study centres. 2005 02 Nov.–01 Dec. 2005 Fellowship–Ph.D, Centro di Ricerca Matematica “Ennio De Giorgi”. A theoretical and precise model to make science in the Renaissance Influence of the history of mechanics on the fortification design for the architectural restoration works and for the reclamation and requalification of the fortified structures (?) Perspectives a) The attention paid by the planners to the history of science and technique during the first study phase based on the comprehension of the settlement and of the socio–historical requalification of the area and of the citizen on which they wanted to act. I hope that – in the interdisciplinary context of the Valle Giulia doctorate – this particular research of mine will provide a significant cultural and scientific spin off for engineers and architects and a contribution to improve their huge and well–constructed technical qualifications. My thesis project could in particular supplement the acquisition of the theoretical, methodological instruments and of the typical models of historical and epistemological research using this mentioned knowledge in order to describe and understand important problems concerning the architecture and the building industry (for ex. structural, aesthetic problems and those concerning the settlement) that could need an interdisciplinary study and approach. b) The identification of a method of making science in the Renaissance based on logical and mathematical choices could enrich the current organization of the physics fundaments between XVII and XX centuries 25–26 Raffaele Pisano, Ph.D. «The research is original results The results demonstrate the excellent ability to address the theme in an interdisciplinary way with relapse also specifies for the advancement of knowledge relating to the project » .
