Attend a Board meeting; come to a workshop; attend a committee meeting; and learn about the association, so you won’t be surprised when certain actions are taken by the Board. I feel we are the luckiest association in North Las Vegas. Very few associations have the facilities we have, and even fewer offer the activities and programs that are presented each month. I know we would have a thousand unit owners at the next Board meeting if the rumor was that the Board was considering an increase in assessments. Make it a point to get informed. It’s your home, your community, and we want to hear from you. October 2014 - 3 B R E E Z E Facilities Manager Juan Macias - 702-638-5009 [email protected] T H E Customer Service Coordinator We, as members of a volunteer board, do not elect to make decisions in a vacuum. Decisions are, hopefully, made once all the pertinent data is in, and it is determined that the action taken is in the best interest of the community. Not every Board member may agree; but in a volunteer democracy, the majority decision carries. We, who volunteer to run for the Board, do the very best we can for the community. We have heard that unit owners want the Board to act faster than we do. Those in favor don’t understand why it takes so long to come to a final conclusion. The same is true for those who oppose an action. Both sides need to understand the Board has a fiduciary duty to the unit owners to maintain and enhance the quality of the lifestyle people wanted when they bought here. The Board understands not everyone takes advantage of the facilities or the programs that are offered, but that does not mean we shouldn’t have these facilities or activities. - Assistant Manager Virginia Marquart - 702-638-5006 [email protected] Certainly, owners have the right to answers. This is our community, and what is done or not done affects everyone. My first response, especially to questions about the “sport complex,” is: did you attend any of the workshops held in 2013? Have you attended a Board meeting or even read the Breeze? Sad to say, the answer is generally no; or I don’t have time for such meetings; or I won’t be using this or that, so why do I care? In truth, we all need to care. W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M Activities & Fitness Director Lynn Garlock-Wright - 702-638-5061 [email protected] It seems hard to believe, but we are about to end the third quarter of 2014. Over the summer months, I have had some time to think about what is happening and what I perceive is missing. I’ve had owners approach me asking, “What is happening within our community?” I receive questions about parking on the streets; questions about the money we are spending on the “sports complex” and questions about removal of grass around the front drive into the community and around the community center. ASSOCIATION NEWS Dear Residents: W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M - T H E B R E E Z E Good nutrition plays an important role in how well you age. Eating a healthful diet helps keep your body strong and can help reduce your risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and osteoporosis. Studies even show a link between healthful eating and longevity. “As we age, the body becomes less efficient at absorbing some key nutrients. Appetite and taste can suffer from loss of sense of smell and taste or from side effects of medications. Bad teeth can make some foods difficult to chew or digest,” said Arthur Hayward, MD, a geriatrician and the clinical lead physician for elder care with Kaiser Permanente’s Care Management Institute. “So choosing foods carefully is smart.” Here are five tips to help you get the nutrition your body needs: 1. Avoid empty calories. Foods with empty calories may contain very few vitamins and minerals. “Convenience foods,” such as packaged snacks, chips and sodas, are common sources of empty calories. Avoid the “bad” carbs -- foods that have white flour, refined sugar and white rice. 2. Choose nutrient-rich foods. Eat a variety of foods. The more you vary the foods you eat, the more vitamins, minerals and other nutrients you get. For example: * Eat lots of fruits and vegetables -- Choose fresh, frozen or no-salt canned vegetables and fruits in their own juice or light syrup. * Eat foods with protein -- Protein is found in lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs and cheese, cooked beans, peanut butter and nuts and seeds. * Get enough calcium and vitamin D -- Calcium and vitamin D are found in milk and milk products, including yogurt and cheese. They are also in green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collard greens) and tofu. * Include foods high in vitamin B12 -- After 50, the body produces less gastric acid and absorbs less B12, which helps keep blood and nerves vital. B12 is found in milk, meat, poultry, fish and eggs. * Eat high-fiber foods -- This includes fruits, vegetables, cooked dried beans and whole grains. 4 - October 2014 3. Drink plenty of fluids. Drink plenty of fluids -- enough so that your urine is light yellow or clear like water. Fiber and fluids help with constipation. 4. If your appetite is poor. Try eating smaller meals, several times a day, instead of one or two large meals. Eating while socializing with others may help your appetite. You might also ask about changing medicines. Medication can cause appetite or taste problems. 5. Eat soft foods. As we approach our senior years, chewing food is sometimes difficult. Choose low-sodium canned vegetables or cooked fruits and vegetables. These are often softer. Chop or shred meat, poultry or fish. Add sauce or gravy to the meat to help keep it moist. For healthy recipe ideas, check out Kaiser Permanente’s Food for Health blog at https://foodforhealth.kaiserpermanente.org. In addition to eating a balanced diet, aim for 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Ten-minute sessions several times a day on most days are fine. C O M - T H E B R E E Z E News from Community Standards It’s time to prepare your landscape for the cooler temperatures! Desert plants grow whenever water is available to them. Because new growth is tender, it is very important to limit the water given to desert plants, especially cactus, during the winter. Most desert-adapted species can survive a cold winter well with one good soaking at the end of October or mid-November, and no more water until late February. This is particularly true for cacti, which may look shriveled, but will survive severe cold much better. Often we experience a rather warm winter, and your watering schedule will need to reflect this. Warm winter watering can be as little as two to four times per month. Spring watering will resurrect them quite nicely! Extremely cold weather can do sever damage to your irrigation system and exposed pipes. Don’t wait until the damage is done! Wrap any exposed water pipes with an insulating material to protect from freezing. Cover exposed anti-siphon valves with a protective covering, such as PVB protectors, and fill valve boxes with perlite or vermiculite for insulation. Trash pickup is every Tuesday and the bulk pick up dates are October 14 and 28. Do not put your trash receptacles out at the curb before Monday night at 6 p.m., and put them away no later than Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Architectural Review Committee will meet on the October 3 and 17. All applications must be submitted no later than noon the Thursday prior to the meeting. Please remember that any exterior change to your home or your front or backyard requires the approval of the ARC before you start the project. The Membership and Compliance office will be closed on October 31 in observance of Nevada Day. Be safe this Halloween and don’t let your yard get spooky! Make sure to trim your trees and bushes back to your own property line and out of your neighbor’s yard. Make sure you can see your address numbers clearly by keeping mature trees trimmed back, and remember to never leave out treats for wildlife no matter what time of year it is! To update your emergency contacts, email Cathie at csnow@ suncityaliante.us or stop by the office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. If you have any questions please contact me, Virginia, at 702-6385006 or [email protected]. Virginia Marquart Director of Standards & Compliance, Assistant Manager 6 - October 2014 Aliante Masters Association The Aliante Master Association Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 23 at 7 p.m. in the Activity Room at the Community Center. All Aliante residents are encouraged to attend. FOR YOUR SAFETY KEEP THE LIGHTS ON The North Las Vegas Police Department recommends that we turn on our porch lights and the carriage lights on your garage at night. It helps the police, as well as the Neighborhood Watch patrols driving around after dark to see the front of your home. Make sure your porch lights and address number lights are in working order and not burned out. Help make your street the brightest in the community! You never know when someone might go through your trash or just steal it altogether. They can be looking for aluminum cans, plastic or scarier yet, your identity. Identity theft is one of the fastest rising types of crime today! According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department Fraud Division, if your social security number or that 20 year-old bank record that you finally got around to tossing out were to fall into the wrong hands, you could suffer financially. Those in possession of your identity information could refinance your home or reactivate a closed credit card account without your knowledge within a matter of hours. Frightening isn’t it!!! October 2014 - 7 B R E E Z E Be safe, Your Neighborhood Watch Block Captains T H E For more information regarding the Sun City Aliante Neighborhood Watch program, contact our Coordinator, Jerry Overton, at [email protected] and 702-639-2291. - You can reduce the risk of identity theft by simply shredding your files with a cross-cut shredder before throwing them away. The Police Department tells us that the old straight cut shredders aren’t good enough any more. So, do not put anything in your trash you don’t want someone else to see, and remember to shred, shred and cross-cut shred. W W W . S C A L N L V . This is our club, our community and I’m glad to be a part of it, Paul At The Club: We’ve had a blast at the golf clinic (open to all abilities) Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. ($20 per golfer). The clinic includes 45 minutes of group instruction and is limited to eight students per session, email [email protected] to sign up. Golf Quote: “The ardent golfer would play Mount Everest if somebody put a flagstick on top.” -Pete Dye - On the Golf side of the fence, we are proud to unveil two added values to the green fees, which we hope will also serve as a speed up in our pace of play. Our brand new GPS system is up and running and installed on every golf cart. The tablet-based system from Digital Caddie will allow our golfers to get an overview of the hole before tee off and accurately view their ball position yardage to the green; so no more wandering around the fairways looking for yardage! Secondly, we will include a warm up basket of practice balls, along with our green fees, to golfers who tee off prior to twilight. This will allow our golfers to get a bit looser before heading to the first or tenth tee! W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M It is my pleasure to welcome you back to another exhilarating season at Aliante Golf Club! To those of you who never left the valley this summer, we survived the heat again and played some golf along the way. To those who are rejoining us, good to have you back safely. We have some exciting changes to discuss so let’s get right to it! I would like to start by welcoming Chris Morris to Aliante Golf Club. Chris is our new food and beverage manager. He hails from Troon Golf by way of St. George property, Entrada. Chris brings a wealth of food and beverage experience, and he has already endeared himself to all of us here at the club. Chris is excited about the opportunity, and I am excited to see him display his “Hibachi Ninja Skills” at our “9 and Dine,” as he was a Hibachi Chef in the past! Come over and say hello to our “new guy,” and check out the brand new “3100 Grill” with some of the old favorites and a new flare. I am excited to get back to work with all of my students! We have enjoyed a nice little break, and now it is time to get back to it. We will offer something a bit different this year in the way of lessons. Ask us about a “Quick Tune Up.” We will offer 20-minute lessons for $20. COMING ATTRACTIONS Monroe Powell’s Salute to the Platters Saturday, October 18 The Vista Ballroom, 7 p.m. Enjoy the golden tunes of the yesterday right here in the SCAL Vista Ballroom. Back by popular demand, we invite you to a special performance of “Monroe Powell’s Salute to the Platters” in Sun City Aliante’s Vista Ballroom on Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. In 1956, The Platters appeared in the first major motion picture based around rock ‘n’ roll, “Rock Around the Clock,” performing their hits “Only You” and “The Great Pretender.” Their unique vocal style touched a nerve in the music-buying public, and a string of hit singles followed, including two more Top 100 #1 hits, one Hot 100 #1 hit, and more modest hits such as “I’m Sorry” (#11),“He’s Mine” (#23), “Enchanted” (#12) and “The Magic Touch” (#4). The Platters then hit upon the successful formula of updating older standards, such as “My Prayer,” Twilight Time,” “Harbor Lights,” “To Each His Own,” “If I Didn’t Care,” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in its inaugural year of 1998. The show begins at 7 p.m. The cost is $15 for residents and $17 for guests. Please sign up at the monitor’s desk by noon, October 17. They were also the only act to have three songs included on the “American Graffiti” soundtrack that sparked an oldies revival in the 1970s: “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “The Great Pretender,” and “Only You.” Monroe Powell, an opera-trained virtuoso, holds the distinction of being the lead singer of The Platters longer than any other legitimate member. He began his career with The Dominos and The Ink Spots, and, in 1970, found a permanent home with The Platters. On stage, his voice is characterized by swelling crescendos, whispers and sensual pauses in a magnificent and unique style. There is no doubt music lovers are overwhelmed by his voice, debonair charm and warm sense of humor. C O M - T H E B R E E Z E The Nevada Senior Olympics Pickleball Tournament will be held at the new Sun City Aliante Sports Complex October 6 through 8. A total of 250 players from around the country registered to compete in the games. Players, participating in the Pickleball Tournament, will compete to qualify for the nationals held in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2015. The biennials National Senior Games (NSGA) hold a national competition which is open to players who have qualified in sanctioned state tournaments under stringent standards. To date, the National Senior Games have held 14 national championships in cities across the country. The National Senior Games Association was founded in 1985 in St. Louis, Missouri. A group of seven men and women formed the original leadership for the group initially known as the National Senior Olympics Organization. Their vision was to promote healthy lifestyles for adults through education, fitness and sports. In 1990, an agreement was reached with the US Olympic Committee to drop the term Olympics and change their name to the National Senior Games Association (NSGA). Nevada was one of the few states, which was allowed to continue to use the term Olympic. The NSGA exists today as a non-profit organization comprised of 49 member organizations and two associate member organizations which conduct multi-sport state competitions dedicated to motivating active adults to lead a healthy lifestyle through the Senior Games movement. The Senior Games are played across the country, allowing seniors to compete in 19 core sports, with many sports comprising several events against competitors of similar ages. Sports, including track and field (hammer throw, javelin, high jump, triple jump, pole vault etc.) swimming, shooting, archery and various team sports, such as basketball and softball, are held in Olympic form. Events may be divided into specific age groups, usually in increments of 10 years (50-59, 60-69 etc.). The age groups can be smaller or larger, depending on the event and number of participants. Pickleball is divided into five-year increments due to the large number of entrants. Winners are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. The 2015 National Games in Minneapolis are expected to draw 12,000 participants with an anticipated audience of 100,000 plus. He participates in most of the veteran’s activities and parades in the area. Among his hobbies, Rod enjoys flying (he earned his private pilots license in the 1970s). Rod and Elaine each have two adult, married children, and together they share eight wonderful grandchildren. “It seems like most of our travel together is to see our children and grandchildren, as they are scattered like dust in the wind,” says Rod. Rod enjoys playing both drums and guitar with the Sun City Aliante Songsters because, “It’s a nice group of people who enjoy making music together.” October 2014 - 27 B R E E Z E Since the start-up of SAS at Sun City Aliante in 2011, volunteers in Sun City Aliante have made 1,379 calls to provide help to those in need. SAS is sponsored by The Veterans Club of SCAL, Sy Nielson, chairman. The Trustees of SAS are Karl Vonderohe and Alan Melnick. The SAS hotline is 702-981-3149. T H E Donations from seniors, community groups and fund-raising activities provide the resources to grant funds to the volunteer groups at no charge. These services include replacing light bulbs, air filters, smoke alarms and CO2 alarm batteries, as well as, wheelchairs, walkers and other items free of charge. Before moving to Sun City Aliante in 2012, Rod worked for a scientific manufacturing firm in Carlsbad, California as the director of sales and marketing. The company made instrumentation primarily for colleges and universities; one of their instruments was featured on the popular television series 24, and several of their instruments were installed on the space shuttle vehicles. - The Foundation provides funds to Seniors Assisting Seniors (SAS) in Sun City Aliante, The Community Service Club, Sun City Anthem, Neighbors Assisting Neighbors and Solera at Anthem. This represents about 15,000 residents. After graduation, Rod enlisted in the US Navy and went through years of training to become a nuclear reactor operator on a fast attack submarine that deployed several times to the Vietnam War patrol area. A member of the crew, who was previously a professional guitarist, he wanted to learn to play the drums. Rod had always wanted to learn the guitar, so he bought a guitar during a stop in the Philippines. The other sailor bought a practice pad and set of drum sticks. With their instruments, they gave each other music lessons off the coast of Vietnam. Although Rod’s primary instrument is drums, he is still pretty good at the guitar. During college, he took music theory and piano to enhance the keyboard skills he first learned on the accordion; he never followed through to become proficient on the keyboard. W W W .
