This Roman emperor presided over the completion of the Roman Coliseum, destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D, and built the famous arch still standing in Rome. Who is he? 2. This activity, considered both a game and a method of making decisions, was introduced by the ancient Romans—most notably Julius Caesar. Referred to a “caput aut navis” (ship or chief) by the Romans, this activity was widely used for civil and criminal disputes. Name this activity. E l’odore, l’odore di pino mai piu fino a me giungera. Via stroncata. He was born in the town of Pescina in the Abruzzo region and lost many family members, including his mother, in the 1915 Avezzano earthquake. His father had died in 1911. Silone joined the Young Socialists group of the Italian Socialist Party (PSI), rising to be their leader. He was a founding member of the breakaway Communist Party of Italy (PCd'I) in 1921, and became one of its covert leaders during the Fascist regime. Ignazio's brother Romolo Tranquilli was arrested in 1928 for being a member of the PCI, and he died in prison in 1931 as a result of the severe beatings he received. Italian historians Dario Biocca and Mauro Canali found documents which, they claimed, 'proved' that Silone Silone in the 1920’s. acted as an informant for the Fascist police from 1919 until 1930. The two historians published the results of their research in a work titled L'informatore. Silone, i comunisti e la polizia. In spite of bitter controversy in the Italian press, Biocca's and Canali's work proved to be substantiated and was reviewed in a positive light by theLondon Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, The New Yorker, The Nation, New Left Review and others. A 2005 biography by Biocca also includes documents showing Silone's involvement with the American intelligence (the OSS) during and after the World War, ultimately suggesting that Silone's political stands (as well as extensive literary work) should be reconsidered in light of a more complex personality and political engagements. In his later years. Ignazio Silone was married to Darina Laracy, an Irish student of Italian literature. He died in Geneva, Switzerland in 1978. His works include: Fontamara (1930) Fascism – Its Origin and Development (1934) Bread and Wine (1937) (original Italian title: Pane e Vino) The School for Dictators (1938) The Living Thoughts of Mazzini (1939) The Seed Beneath the Snow (1940) Ed egli si nascose. Dramma in quattro atti (1944) The God that Failed (contribution) (1949) Emergency Exit (1951); published in a collection of the same name with nine other works in 1969 Handful of Blackberries (1952) Wine and Bread (1955 revised version of the 1937 title) (orig. Italian Vino e pane) Luca's Secret (1956) (orig. Italian Il Segreto di Luca) Story of a Humble Christian (1968) (orig. Italian L'avventura di un povero cristiano) As a member of the House of Deputies. Three of Silone's poems were included by Hanns Eisler in his Deutsche Sinfonie, along with poetry by Bertolt Brecht. Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Abruzzo Culture Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Abruzzo Culture NEWS FROM THE ABRUZZO REGION 2016-01-25 (REGFLASH) - Pescara, 25 gen. As President of the Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan (FADM), I often speak to people about their heritage and background always interjecting the subject of Abruzzo and Membership to the FADM when possible. What if find startling is that even when people know their family is from the Abruzzo Region, they don’t know about the rich culture or traditions that come from there. Enzo Paglia In the Abruzzo Heritage section of our newsletter, La Voce d’Abruzzo, we highlight just how rich and our heritage is. From Dean Martin and Perry Como, as our anchor celebrities, to Tommy LaSorda in sports and Ignazion Silone and Mario Fratti in literature and theatre to Madonna in music. As a member of the FADM make sure your familiarize yourself with these well known personalities and be ready to let people and family know that your Region has produced so many of the worlds leading artists and scientists. This is particularly true to let our children and grandchildren know. If they ask you, “Dad where is our family from in Italy?” Let them know. Who are we? (Chi siamo noi?) We are artists, scientists, doctors, musicians, playwrights, theologians, that have made a difference in the world; and can still make a difference if we but carry on our traditions and family values.
